Curious Thoughts

Criticize Much?

WORK. We all gotta do it. It is essential to survival, because if a man doesn’t work, he doesn’t eat, right? Work can be an enjoyable thing but sometimes work can be highly stressful for a plethora of reasons. I would like to discuss one part of work that I don’t enjoy but in my working life, I have come to understand that it is often necessary. That would be criticism. In fact it makes cringe actually.

As of late work, has been particularly trying for me. My work involves me putting together well-designed marketing packages for properties that are for sale. Like deals that are worth several million dollars. Designing doesn’t always come easy to me but I can do it. It takes me some time but I can do it. Well this week, I’ve had to endure being told that my work doesn’t look good, that the designs were ugly and unliked. Ouch. Definitely something you don’t want to hear after you’ve spent hours putting it together for them. So what’s a girl to do? How do you handle criticism from your bosses? Because despite the criticism I was receiving, I still had to produce a good product. Here’s what I did:

1. Ask Questions

Sometimes when it comes to producing a creative product, people or clients have a hard time expressing exactly what they want. They say something like, “just make it look good” and you go and do that only for you to find out that’s not what they meant. So I ask questions, I go through each page with them if I have to. I ask what are you trying to accomplish here? What do you want to highlight on this page? Why is this important? You shouldn’t be afraid to ask questions,it is welcomed a good majority of the time. Plus it shows you taking ownership of your job.

2. Exceed Expectations

Be willing to do what is necessary to get the job done. This usually means working longer hours or picking up extra shifts. Though I do find it frustrating when projects are not executed in the way they should be. I still want to do a good job. So I put in the work for that to happen. Making efforts like this usually doesn’t go unnoticed by management. Even it does go unnoticed, having an impeccable work ethic makes you hire worthy in anyone’s book.

3. Bulk Up Your Training

Not being a designer by trade, I always am seeking to improve my skills. I am way better designer than when I first started this job. This is due to the fact that I spent hours watching instructional design videos and practicing things I learn. I am now at a point where I can fine tune a couple of skills. in fact, I will have some downtime soon and I already have planned some training for myself. Pay attention to the things you keep getting critiqued on and then go out and get the training that you need so that you can improve.

How do you handle criticism from your boss on the job? Please share. I am curious to know.

Facing Your Fears with Curiosity

Replace Fear

I had an epiphany recently, and it started when I saw this picture. Actually I was looking for some curious inspiration for my next post and this is what I stumbled upon. Thank you Pinterest!! When I came across the picture above, I stopped and pondered. Right now in this very moment I am facing a lot of unknowns that I have felt fear grip me and often cause me to hesitate. So I admit it. I have a fear of the unknown. However, I have embraced this truth; none us will know how things turn out until we become curious enough to find out. I started to take notice of my fear and was actually seeking a solution that would help me shake it off. Not necessarily on Pinterest but, hey you never know when answers come to you and the form they may take. So back to my point. Being the Curious gal that I am and having the need to satisfy my curiosity, I am going to do just what this beautifully stated quote says. Be just curious enough.I believe that being curious will cause me to seek answers to my questions, to learn, to grow, to find out just what is on that other side, and best of all overcome. Overcome the very thing I was fearing not knowing, So I won’t fear, I’ll just pursue curiosity instead and see what beautiful thing is waiting for me on the other side.

How to Stay in the Know

There is always something to do, especially in a place like Orlando. I’ve been here for 4 years and there is always something to do and believe it or not, it doesn’t always involve going to Disney or Universal. I like to consider myself as a girl about town. I love to get out and explore. When I moved here I made that my number one goal so much so that my friends would often ask me, “How do I constantly find events?” I really love this question so I am going answer it right here on the Curious Gal blog.  Below, are just a few methods I use to stay in the know.

1. Pick Up the Weekly Local Event Paper

I believe that you can find one in every city. The one I pick up is called the Orlando Weekly. It is a FREE event newspaper that comes out every Wednesday, just in time for the weekend. It covers some local stories but most importantly, it lets you know about the events going on in the city and surrounding areas. They cover music, art and culture, film, learning opportunities, and my personal favorite Food and Drink. Yes I’m a big foodie. They also provide a calendar of upcoming events for the week. What’s really cool about this paper and something that I look forward to reading a couple times a year is their Annual Manual and Holiday Editions.

2. I Read a Good Number of Local Blogs

Every city has slew of local bloggers and they are always in the know. Why is this? They get previews to almost everything that’s opening, that’s new, that’s tasty, you name it. It definitely is a good idea to follow and read some of these blogs, so you too can know what’s new in your city and I guarantee it will at least give you some new ideas on what you can do.  One way I keep up with these blogs is that I put them in a reader called Feedly. I have a category called Orlando and another called Orlando Food Bloggers.  I also follow a good number of these bloggers on Instagram, which leads me to my next point.

3. I Use Instagram and Hashtags to Find Events

There is such a thrill, I get when I find things and Instagram gives me lots of thrills. I started out mostly following local bloggers that I knew of but that grew to me following local city accounts, local organizations, businesses, food places (lots of food places), accounts that host events, and local hashtags. If you’re wanting to find out unique things to do I highly recommend that you find out your city’s local hashtag. I do believe most cities have them. I know when I lived in Michigan, the city where I lived used the hashtag #lovelansing and it was used at most of the events I attended. Here in Orlando, one of the hashtags is #orlandodoesntsuck. Using hashtags, I found out about a lot of cool events this way. One event in particular that I went on recently was a bike tour of the city and it was because of Instagram. On the tour, we stopped at various places and took pictures and posted them to Instagram, got some great exercise, and I got to meet some really cool people. So go out and do it for the Gram and find some cool things to do in your city.

How do you stay in the know? Do you currently do any of the things above? If not, will you try any of the above?
